Hanover Kansas Tornado

4/6/06

I had missed out on the March 12 event and was eager to redeem myself. This was a high risk day (kind of a bust high risk) but was not a bust for me. Sean, Katie and I left Lincoln in the late morning with a inital target of Marysvill Kansas. There we met up with fellow chaser Ben. Upon arrival to Marysville severe convection had already fired to our SW and was working NE we droped south on hwy 77.

We were treated to quite the mamatus display as we entered Marysville

Very poor quality but you can see how this storm was an unusal tornado producer as it had a lot of convection on its flanking line note the NNE movement, I was slightly worried that with a NNE movement and convection to its south that it may not be able to produce.

This image is of the updraft base shortly before it began to produce, it was rotating really fast at this point and in the picture you can see a eddy like feature this is where the tornado would shortly form.

The tornado formed as a cone tornado but quickly took on this "Wizard of Oz" shape much due to its abnormally high base.

While trying to keep up with the fast moving storm we ran into some unusal debris.

Besides it's intial cone shape this is the tornado when it was at its largest.

The tornado put on quite an interesting show as it roped out.
