Platte and Elkhorn Rivers
Feb. 5th
These pictures were taken that last couple of days on the Platte and Elkhorn rivers. Both are currently prone to ice jams, the Platte has so far not jammed up and has been flushing most of the ice. The Elkhorn on the other hand has been jamming around the West Point area. Several roads including hwy 275 near West Point are closed. Unfortunately, due to the road closers and the fact that most of the river is lined with inaccessible private property, you cannot get close enough to the river in the region of the main jam. Just today I received my new Ultra Wide Angle lens (a Sigma 10-20mm) it should serve as a great landscape and storm lens, I am anxious to get out and use it.
These pictures were taken on the Platte River. This was just as the ice was starting to break up, huge chunks were being broke loose, they would start out at chunks as big as 30x30 yards, before slaming into the bank and other pieces, breaking them into smaller chunks. The ground would shake when one would hit the bank.
After walking back to the River, I walked along the Creek for a little while looking for Antler Sheds. Will probably return to the root ball with the new wide angle, as the Telephoto didn't do it justice.
The following are as close as I could get to the Jam near West Point. Appeared as there was about a 3 mile jam, though there was no where to get photos as roads were closed and or there were no roads. These pics were taken about 5 miles downstream of the Jam, near Scribner.
